Relax and feel the new energy float through your body

In alternative medicine, Reiki is a treatment in which healing energy is channeled from the practitioner to the patient to reduce stress, pain and fatigue. After Reiki sessions, clients often mention that they feel relaxed, calm, peaceful, more centered, better able to focus and more energetic.

Reiki has its roots in Tebetan, Chinese, Indian, Egyptian, Japanese and Roman cultures.  The word Reiki is composed of two syllables Rei and Ki.  Reimeans universal, it is always there, available for everybody to tap into. Ki is the energy that sustains life. Life force plays an important role in everything we are and do.  If life force is low, or if it is restricted, one is more vulnerable to illness.  When it is high and flowing freely, a person is less likely to get sick, but instead feels good about himself/herself, and the tasks at hand are welcomed with zest and creativity.

Have you been recently diagnosed with or are currently going through treatment for breast cancer? Are you a breast cancer survivor? Many women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer feel alone and that no one in their personal support circle can truly understand what they are going through.

Our Self-Help Groups are a safe haven where women can come together with a trained, experienced facilitator in a safe, welcoming environment. You can gain so much by talking to other women on journeys similar to yours. Our Self-Help Groups offer women the opportunity to be open with their experiences, concerns and questions and to learn from and support each other. Share experiences or just listen. We have four separate Self-Help Groups each month - three are open to all and one is specifically for women with metastatic cancer.

It can be intimidating joining a group for the first time but we are here for you.

Metastatic breast disease is breast cancer that has not just come back, but has made its way through the bloodstream and spread to other organs of the body, such as the bones, liver, or brain. Cancer spread may be present at first diagnosis or after recurrence. Many women can live for years with metastatic cancer that is under control. For these women, living with a diagnosis of metastatic breast cancer is like living with a chronic disease. Their needs are much different than those of a women recently diagnosed or who's cancer is isolated to the breast.

Services We Offer

When Michelle's Place started in 2001 it offered only a few basic services which were primarily focused on information and personal support. From the beginning we believed that it was important that the needs of the community should guide the services we offered and nearly 15 years later that is exactly what has happened.  We have created a foundation of services based on 3 core needs that we have found within the community:

Detection - We work with local medical providers and other programs such as Every Woman Counts to ensure that women who have a symptom of breast cancer get the tests required to get a diagnosis.

Support - We offer a welcoming environment with friendly and caring people that only want to ease the struggles of woman going through cancer.

Education - Empowering people with information so that they can take control and manage their health care.

From this foundation we now offer the following services organized by category:

Service Programs

The three core focus areas of Michelle's Place, Detection, Support and Education, provide guidance on the types of services we offer at Michelle's place, put our intention is to focus and offer services based on the needs in the community.  Responding to those needs has resulted in the development of a service program that aligns with each of our core focus area.  While some of these programs are focused to address specific gaps and needs within the community, it does not mean that our services are not available if you do not qualify.

Personal Support Services

Cancer treatment itches. It burns. It makes you feel cold, sore, dizzy, nauseous, exhausted, and often sad and lonely. And, because it's so expensive, many can't afford the simple things that make it bearable. Basic comfort items – a scarf, warm socks, a wig, a cap, prosthesis, even a haircut – can soothe discomfort and provide a huge boost during what might be the most difficult time of a person's life. Michelle's Place offers comfort items and personal support services free to those living with breast cancer.

"If there is any message I could pass on it would be to take today's opportunities and live your dreams.  I know sometimes it's hard not to be stressed out by life and bogged with minor problems.  Try to remember what matters most to your heart and be thankful for what you do have."
