A Journey Through Cancer, Loss, and Unwavering Resilience
Brittany Reyes, a lively and engaging 34-year-old woman, never imagined that just months after saying “I do” to the love of her life, she would be fighting for her life. Married in a beautiful ceremony on April 30, 2023, Brittany and her husband, Ronnie, were eager to start their family—dreaming of at least two children and a future filled with love, laughter of littles, and parenting adventures. But life had other plans.
Having struggled with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) since her teenage years, Brittany knew conceiving might be a challenge. From a very early age, she carried the weight of adulthood—her parents’ separated when she was 12, forcing her into the role of caretaker, leaving little space for childhood. The stress of this and what she learned was a hormonal imbalance, took a toll, and led her down a dark path, and an eventual suicide attempt.
Determined to break free from past traumas and a cycle of mental health struggles she set out on a journey of deep self-discovery and healing. Dedicating years to understanding her body, strengthening her mind, and reclaiming her sense of self. Now, as a 34-year-old newlywed, she was finally ready—ready for love, ready for motherhood, ready for the future she had so carefully built.
When the couple met with doctors to begin their fertility journey, an ultrasound revealed abnormalities in her uterus. A D&C was recommended to clear it out, but the results from that procedure changed everything. When her follow-up appointment was abruptly rescheduled, and she was asked to bring her husband and mother, she knew the news would be devastating. On October 2, 2023, at just 34 years old, Brittany was diagnosed with stage two endometrial cancer. The doctor’s recommendation was an immediate full hysterectomy. There was no time to freeze eggs, no time to consider alternative options—just the harsh reality that the future she had envisioned was slipping away.
Surgery Day
By January 29, Brittany underwent surgery. In just a few short months, she went from a hopeful newlywed to a young woman grappling with the loss of her fertility, her sense of self, and the onset of early menopause. The transition was brutal. Her body changed in ways she never expected, and the identity crisis that followed was overwhelming. The woman who had always taken pride in her long, beautiful hair and glowing skin suddenly felt like a stranger in her own body.
Through the darkest moments, Brittany discovered an unshakable resilience within herself. She found solace in the unwavering support of her husband, who reminded her daily that she was still the woman he fell in love with—whole, beautiful, and enough. Ronnie stood by her side, holding her hand through every appointment, whispering words of encouragement when the weight of it all felt unbearable. Surrounded by family who traveled from Fresno and Long Beach to be by her side, she embraced the outpouring of love and support. Yet, recovery was a challenge—relying on others felt foreign, and the cycle of testing and retesting brought constant fear. Still, she pressed forward, determined to reclaim her strength and move forward with courage.
Relationships Transform
Socially, Brittany’s world transformed. Friends and even some family members drifted away, uncertain of how to offer support. In a season of life where those around her were welcoming babies, gender reveal parties and baby showers became painful reminders of what she had lost. Yet, instead of retreating into resentment, Brittany embraced a new perspective—one rooted in grace and acceptance. She chose to celebrate others despite her own heartache, recognizing that people often struggle to understand or navigate someone else’s grief. Through this, she learned to extend compassion not only to them but, most importantly, to herself.
Through six cycles of chemotherapy, weeks of radiation, and holistic healing practices, Brittany found strength she never knew she had. She embraced a new sense of self—one rooted in authenticity, self-advocacy, and purpose. Michelle’s Place became her sanctuary, a community where she found understanding and support. Through Reiki, breathwork, and deep reflection, she not only worked to heal her body but also made peace with her past, honoring her inner child and choosing to live with intention and resilience. Nature hikes around Diamond Valley Lake became her refuge, grounding her in the present and reminding her of life’s beauty, even amid pain. And though faith had always been a cornerstone of her life, this journey tested it in ways she never expected. The Footprints in the Sand poem took on new meaning—she would sometimes question where God was in her suffering, only to realize He had been carrying her all along.
A Renewed Sense of Self
Today, Brittany walks forward with a renewed sense of self. She has learned that resilience is not just about surviving—it’s about thriving in the face of adversity. Always advocating for herself, her marriage, and her well-being, always keeping communication open with Ronnie, knowing that he, too, has carried this burden in his own way. Brittany has embraced the lesson that while cancer may have taken certain dreams from her, it has also given her the profound gift of self-awareness, strength, and an unbreakable spirit.
Her message to others facing their own battles is clear: Be mindful. Be kind to yourself. Advocate for your needs, but do not let your struggle consume you. Life will always bring the unexpected, but within those challenges lies the opportunity to rise, to redefine yourself, and to live with purpose.
Brittany Reyes is not just a survivor—she is a warrior, full of strength, and a testament to the power of resilience.
